~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Introd10
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[2-1]~

First off, this guide is designed for the average Brink player who wants to play competitivly. It means two things:
#1 It is not a guide that will gather knowledge about finishing the campaign or common things such as listing all the abilities, all the weapons etc. There are already a lot of guides over the net and the wiki that plays this role very well.
#2 Because this guide is made for competitive gaming, NOT public, it doesn't take into account factors such as fun, fairness or sportsmanship (as long as it's legal in tournaments). Also some abilities, classes, bodytypes, etc do not share the same effectiveness whether it's public or competitive so don't be offended if you don't see a good appraisal of one class or another ability. This guide tries to gather the information that will grants you victory in competition.

However because this guide teaches advanced techniques you can significantly improve your skill level for the public, that's why I recommand that you read it even if you only want to play public.

This guide is specialy designed for small format matches so for 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4 matches only. Indeed, 4v4 setups and below are drastically different from public matches where it's a 8v8 setup.The major differences are the following:

+ The operative class is obsolete and its only purpose is to complete hacking objectives.

+ Because there are far less people in-game, encounters will mostly be duels, making the medium and heavy bodytypes obsolete too (as they are designed for static and medium-long
range fights). Also objectives are very vulnerable at the beginning of every respawn waves that's why you need to be able to quickly reach them. Hence the lightweights being the only bodytype you'll see in small format matches.

+ Finally, the consequence of those two aspects is that small format matches are much more fast-paced than 8v8 matches and rely enormously on kills and CQC (close-quarter-combat) or mid-range duels.

This is the equipment that you'll need in real life to improve your gameplay:

+ A healthy brain
+ A pair of hands (...forget the hands you only need thumbs and forefingers...)
+ A good internet connection

And that's all! Expensive headsets and HD screens are not mandatory as sound and graphics won't help you to locate the ennemy in this game (contrary to COD for exemple).
On the other hand your internet connection is really really important. To paraphrase "aldecide"'s Black Ops Guide on Gamefaq: "Multiplayer Combat Guide" (http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/960189-call-of-duty-black-ops/faqs/61428) : Lag rules the world of online FPS: In a 1v1 scenario, assuming that both players are equally skilled and share the same setup (same guns, same abilities etc.) the player with the best connection will dominate the conflict. This is because it takes less time for the information regarding your kill to reach the server. Invest in some good, high speed internet if you can. Otherwise, here are some tricks you can do to optimize your connection:

+ Make sure ONLY your 360 is using the connection. Turn your computer off, pause or stop downloads (especially porn, I know you do :-p), etc.
+ Connect your X-box to your modem, router, etc. with an ethernet cable if possible.

As last pieces advice for your preparation IRL (in real life):

+ Seat centered to your TV: it increases your visual perception of the game.

+ Get yourself something to drink when you play, you want to win but you also want to have fun. :-)

Obviously your character MUST be at max level which is 20 (24 level cap with AoC DLC)
+ Firstly quit being medium and choose the light bodytype.

Playing as a light bodytype will allow you to make Parkour and, more importantly walljumps (see "glossary" 6-1). Walljump is a vital element to master if you want to be a high level player. Walljump will have is own chapter later in this guide. As of now, you need to change the config of your controller to perform walljumps more effectively...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Contro10 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[3-2-1]~
The main thing to understand is that you need to be able to jump without using your thumbs so that you can still move and aim. A good suggestion is to place the jump button as "LB" (left button) and put S.M.A.R.T as "LT" (left trigger). You will lose your ability to aim with the forefingers but it's okay because as I said earlier small format matches and (even the whole game itself!) are heavily based on movement and CQC. And what is the best way to move while firing and win CQC gunfights?? Hipfire! Translation you don't need to "aim" in this game. However aiming as it's utility (we will see it later) and you can still put it as the "RS" button.
As an example:
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Xbox_l10
Also:
+ Play on a rather slow sensibility because a high sensibility generally lacks in precision (however high sensibility in FPS is always better if you're comfortable enough to aim precisely.)
+ Turn the vibration off, or it will screw up your aim.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Weapon10 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[3-2-2]~

As a lightweight you have a limited choice of the weaponry which consist of:

+ one primary: sniper rifles, or SMG (sub-machine gun)
+ one secondary: pistols

Every weapons (when they are naked) are well balanced in their own categories and the several datas about damage, ammo capacity, RoF (rate of fire), reload speed, recoil etc make each guns better suited for certain playstyles and scenarios. That's why in public I recommand that you use whatever weapon you want as long as you're confortable with it and know its potential and limits. For competition it's another story:

For the light I recommand the following weapons:

CQC only:Tampa gets the edge with the highest damage output per seconds (DPS). Tampa has 348 when Carb-9 has 333 and Bupdaun has 303. Tampa suffers badly from a high recoil pattern that's why it lacks in precision when your not in CQC anymore. Here's a good attachment setup to optimize the weapon:

+ Front grip
+ Duct-taped magazine

Mid range/long range: Bulpdaun gets the edge for it's accuracy and stability. However it suffers badly from a lack of ammo capacity, damage and reload time. Here's a good attachment setup to optimize the weapon:

+ Your favorite muzzle brake
+ Front grip
+ High-capacity magazine

My opinion: to become a great player, you need consistency in every way. That also applies to the weapons, so I highly recommand that you take the one that stays good in most situations. With the correct attachements there is one weapon which is overall well-suited for every playstyles and most scenarios and this weapon is: ....*drumroll*........................................."wait for it..."......................................THE "CARB-9"!!

Best Balance and best choice in my opinion: CARB-9 which is a good mix between Tampa and Bulpdaun. Here's a good attachment setup to optimize the weapon:

+ Your favorite muzzle brake (to decrease recoil)
+ The drum-magazine (to spray and pray like a maniac...)
+ The front grip (to decrease recoil two)

As far as pistols are concerned there is here a huge gap regarding balance.

The "sea eagle" is by far the best pistol. Beware though as it has bad accuracy when hip-firing so preferably aim ("RS" if you have read the "controller layout" section) it only needs 3 bullets to kill. To make it even more efficient you'll need the following attachments:

+ The Up-Vent muzzle brake
+ The speed holster
+ Rapid fire

This is basically what you need to know regarding weaponry. If you want more information about weapons but also, about game mechanics here's a cool website that reveals hidden datas for Brink and most console FPS: http://denkirson.xanga.com/738334226/brink/
for Brink only: http://brink.wikia.com/wiki/Weapons

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Abilit10 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[3-2-3]~
Regarding abilities here are some general pieces of advice:
+ Get the "Agent of Change" DLC for its 4 additional credits and the enginner's "pyromine".
+ When you take an ability, don't ask yourself "What do I get?" but "What do I miss? It'll help you to make the best choices. For instance:
-The operative class really only need his "EMP grenade". Every other operative abilities are arguably a waste of credits as there are more important abilities.
+ Seems obvious but DO NOT buy abilities that are practical in public matches only (the engineer's "command post upgrade" for instance, because in scrims command post DO NOT give buffs.)
+ Only make two classes for a character. One for offense and one for defense, so that you are fully specialized in one's class abilities and have a versatile character.
WHAT YOU NEED TO TAKE:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UNIVERSAL ABILITIES:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
+ Grenade shooting (extremely vital regarding kills). See the "Tech skills" section)
+ Battle hardened (For a 30Hp (Health points) bonus)
+ Supply max increase
+ Combat intuition (A good ability, however has a major flaw that can be exploited to make it useless see "the Exploit the game-mechanics" section. I let you be the judge whether you choose or not to get this perk.
+ DO NOT TAKE "SPRINTING GRENADE". Why? Firstly because being able to throw grenade is not mandatory so you save one credit. But, more importantly because when you're cooking a grenade the only thing that can cancel this action is running. Translation: with "sprinting grenade": you are forced to use that grenade. Without this ability: you can cancel the animation of you cooking the grenade by holding the S.M.A.R.T button.
+ Sprinting reload (Obviously for better gunfight management)
+ Resupply rate increase
+ Silent running (This one is arguable, I personally like this ability: it's very useful in 1v1 situations in small maps with a lot of rooms but it's not so useful in 4v4 and rather useless in big maps with lots of open spaces).
+ Downed fire (I personally think that in a FPS once you're dead you're supposed to stay dead so I hate this perk. However, it is extremely useful especially near objectives. Get this ASAP (As soon as possible)).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SOLDIER ABILITIES:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
+ Armor piercing ammo (to ignore the kevlar vest's bonus, mandatory if you want to compete against soldiers)
+ Flashbang grenade (Again it's arguable whereas you choose or not to get this perk. It's only useful in small rooms or small chokepoints, against a group of ennemies but in a 4v4 if the opposing team is good it won't have more than 2 people close enough to effectively use it. Plus it's somehow a waste of pips (see "glossary" 6-1) as molotov coktails and grenade are much more useful as they combine lethality and crowd control.)
+ Grenade mastery
+ Scavenge (Basically it's either Scavenge or Flashbang and I believe that scavenge is overall better as long as no one is around you when you loot.)
+ Kevlar vest
+ Extra magazine
+ Frag blast
+ Grenade damage
+ Napalm grenade ( Basically it denies the access of a small zone for everybody. Its practicals uses are therefore: block a small path for a small amount of time or prevent the enemy to approach a static-only objective (such as planting the bomb). Overall, I share the same opinion about napalm grenade and flashbangs)
+ Satchel charges (this one is actually useful. However because it take too much time to place the charge and it doesn't have a reliable shortcut to detonate the C4 (such as double-tapping "X" in COD, here the shortcut is relatively long as you need to select the C4 with your D-pad and press the grenade button. IMPORTANT you don't need to aim at your C4 at all to blow it.) it purposes are only defensive. See the "Defensive strategies and tips" section [5-3-3] for more information)
~~~~~~~~~~~~
MEDIC ABILITIES:
~~~~~~~~~~~~
+ Adrenaline boost (extremely useful. Has a long cooldown (see "glossary" 6-1) so use it wisely. Most useful when used on the objective (player before planting a bomb for instance).
+ Increase supply
+ Metabolism (Your choice. I personally have it thought I don't use it often. It doubles health regen speed. If your teammate is near death, and starts regen health, he will be fully healed 2 seconds earlier than without "Metabolism". Use it on a good soldier!)
+ Improved increase supplies
+ Speed boost (Your choice, its whether this or Metabolism. It's useful when your teammate needs to quickly go back to the objective or attempt a rush plant however he will be alone...)
+ Improved life buff
+ Self resurrection (Hell Yeah!)
+ Lazarus Grenade (Hell Yeah!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ENGINEER ABILITIES:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
+ Gear head
+ Nerves of steel
+ Light turret
+ Medium turret
+ Improved weapon buff
+ Extra landmine
+ Pyro mine (Very good as it's an extra mine. Best when used for static-only objective)
+ Gatling turret
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OPERATIVE ABILITIES *cough..sucks..cough..cough...*:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
+ EMP grenade
+ If you want an hybrid setup (a character specialized in Operative + 2 classes) you can get the "Caltrop Grenade" and the "Sticky Bomb" abilities (see the "different classes = different roles" section [5-2] for more information about their use.). I don't believe that the "Hack turret" ability is necessary since you have the EMP grenade hence you'll save one credit. You'll now be able to harass the ennemy in ATTACK before going for the objective. You'll also be able to defend in DEFENSE. However know that a [2 soldiers/ 2 Engineers] is optimal in defense as long as your soldiers can kill.
+(I'm sorry Mary Jane, I know it's your favorite class...)
As said earlier, it's best to have two-classes only versatile characters: like Soldier/Engineer or Medic/Enginner (and /Operative if you want).
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Physic10
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Introduction:

What makes a great player? If we think about it, simple things such as good aim, quick reflexes, good knowledge of the maps etc... come to our mind. All these qualities can be gathered to a greater extent into two parts: the physical skills and mental skills. The physical skills are the ones based on your body. That's why it gathers your accuracy, your reflexes, your speed to execute controls etc. If you want to improve, you have to know that Physical skills improve with experience: the more your practice the better you'll get as your muscle memory will make your physicals skills INSTINCTIVE. In a fast-paced game such as Brink a gain of micro seconds in the execution of the controls makes the difference between the winner and the loser. So there is no secret here, to get better from a physical point of view: practise practise practise... just like a musician. I highly recommend that you go in training mode and work on your flaws ( a walljump you have trouble to make for instance). How you work your flaws? You execute your move 10 times and if you fail once, you start again from the beginning.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Techni10 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[4-1]~
+ KNOCKDOWN COMBOS (KC):
Knockdown combos are your best ways to kill your opponent as you paralyze him for a short amount of time.
-All classes:
-Hit the ennemy, *knockdown* then spray
-Slide towards the ennemy, *knockdown* then spray
-The bread and butter combo: THE GRENADE SHOT! Throw a grenade, shoot on it *knockdown* then spray. This is the most effective way to kill someone as it works from distance and adds the lethality of the grenade. (NOTE: YOU NEED THE "GRENADE SHOOTING" ABILITY TO PERFORM THIS COMBO)
-Soldier only, the improved grenade shot: MOLOTOV TO GRENADE COMBO:
-Step1: Throw your cocktail *knockdown*
-Step 2: throw your 'nade
-Step 3 quickly shoot it = insta-kill... if not...
-Step 4: finish him ASAP (as soon as possible) with your gun
-Final Step: don't forget to tea-bag (see "glossary" 6-1) his dead-but-still-warm corpse.
+ WALL JUMP:
Walljump is your main tool as a good player because it enables you to take shortcuts and it has the particularity to increase your speed. Also, you're still able to fire, throw grenades or molotovs. Thus its main uses are:
-To reach unaccessible paths usually shortcuts (such as the alternative routes in shipyard)
-As an offensive tool: With a walljump you can quickly come closer to your ennemy while being hard to aim.
-As a defensive tool: Obviously, when you need to retreat, walljumps allow you to move fast and be unpredictable so walljumps have highly evasive properties.
-Perform a "Wall-up" to travel faster than running resulting in a gain of time. Beware thought it's difficult to perform and if you fail it you'll most likely waste time
+ WALL-UP:
A wall-up is the mere fact of using the walljump's speed increase to move faster. Easier said than done because wall-ups can be difficult to perform and difficult to effectivly use, especially on non-straight paths. How to perform it? Do a walljump, fermly input the opposite direction of the wall with your right stick (so left if you're jumping on the right wall and vice-versa). Then start mashing the "jump" button. You'll make a bunny-hop motion and start to move really fast on a straight line, you can still move you character with your left stick though it's not very accurate.
What you need to understand is that the more you move your right stick during the walljump the more you'll gain speed that's why it's important to dose your angle when you do the walljump otherwise you'll go straight to a wall. Don't be too harsh on yourself if you fail to do it as lag makes wall-up nearly impossible to do...otherwise you may suck.
+ STRAFING:
Strafing is the same as doing quick sidesteps. The idea is during a duel to stay mobile to confuse your ennemy and hinder his accuracy. Only the lightweight has a good strafe so don't bother doing it with a medium or heavy. To effectively strafe you need to move quickly from left to right or vice versa. If you do it to fast you wont really move, if it's too slow you won't really duck bullets. When done correctly not only will you dodge bullets with class but you'll also become a chick magnet as women find dancing sexy (according to a recent poll...). Also, try not to be too predictable, so vary you pattern (ex: left-right-left-right-leeeeeeft-right-left).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Mental10
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Introduction:
Mental skills as opposed to physical skills gather all your abilities that comes from your mind. So it gathers your knowledge of the game mechanics, knowledge of the maps (shortcuts, heat zones, chokepoints) weaponry, classes, strategies/playstyles, the ability to read your opponent and to out-smart him, knowledge of the best action to take in certain scenarios etc... This part is really vast but pays far more than the physical skills however those parts are complementary: master both and you'll become an expert player.
+ Hit location multipliers are segmented into:
-Head (1.5x damage multiplier)
-Torso & Arms (1.0x)
-Legs (0.75x)
+ Light has 120 health
+ It takes 40 seconds for the soldier's bomb to explose.
+ It takes about 7.30 seconds to start regen with and without Metabolism
+ All classes:
-There is a 14 second cooldown period between Frag Grenade uses
- "Resupply Rate Increase" makes your supply meter refill 20% faster
+ As a soldier:
- Molotov cocktails have a 20 second cooldown period between uses.
- "Kevalr Vest" protects you so that you take only 90% of the bullet's damages.
- "Frag Blast" increases the splash radius of your frags by 20%
- "Grenade Damage" increases your standard grenades' damages by 20%
+ As a medic:
- Metabolism doubles health regen speed gaining 2 seconds for a full-health recovery.
- "Adrenaline Boost" lasts for 5 seconds.
- "Speed Boost" gives you a 10% faster sprint boost that remains for 15 seconds
+ As an engineer:
- Building a turret takes 4 seconds. 3 with "Gear Head"
- Deploying mines takes 3 seconds. 2 with "Gear Head"
- It takes 5 seconds to defuse the bomb. 4 with "Nerves of Steel"
- The "Improved weapon buff" increases your weapon's damage by 31% instead of the basic 18% from the standard kit
+ As an operative:
- Sticky bombs have a 20 second cooldown period between each use.
- Calltrops don't hurt teammates and remain on the floor until the cooldown period is finished. The cooldown lasts 30 seconds. Each spike cause 5 damages with a maximum of 25 damages per seconds. The faster you move through the spikes the more they hurt.
- EMP Grenades temporarily disable enemy turrets, mines, and radars. They also slow down the progress of enemy Hacks and HE charges.
+ Combat intuition works only if you litterally aim at the ennemy with your crosshair. Meaning you can follow someone without him noticing it as long as you don't aim him directly.
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Differ10
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[5-2]~

THE SOLDIER:
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Soldie10

[Slayer role] and Objective player
DEFENSE and ATTACK: Always in the front line, their role is to kill so they open the way for the objective players in attack or prevent the ennemy to go near the objectives in defense. Should always go for spawn kill (see "glossary" 6-1) as it paralyzes the enemy team or even better: spawn-trap (see "glossary" section 6-1).
When playing defensive, if you have the snatchel charges you can place those near the engineer mines so that you don't need to watch them and the blow of the two paired-up explosives will kill lights. Without the engineer's mine you have to know where the ennemy is so it works well near objectives as you know when the opponent is repairing or defusing etc, it even stays after you respawn so if you get killed you can still blow it. Also if you have the flashbang grenade use it when expecting the ennemy presence like before room raiding the bomb site in "Aquarium"

THE MEDIC:
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Medic10

[Support role] and Objective player
ATTACK ONLY (When spawns are far from the objective, or it's a bomb planting objective, otherwise, medics are rather useless especially in DEFENSE) Medic are very weak so they need to stay behind the team! Also it's not necessary to stay near the objective player as he's first priority of the ennemy and you will most likely loose encounters. I believe that in order to get their full potential medic should be played like this:

+ Give the "adrenaline boost" to the soldier who's planting the bomb, or to the objective player who's delivering the briefcase. It can be useful when hacking, repairing but you need to stay close to the objective player and you'll most likely die so do it when the objective is almost completed.

+ Escort soldiers and giving them health buffs so they win battles, and can spawnkill the ennemy.

+ Avoid conflicts as much as you can and try not to waste pips by throwing grenades. Remember it's not your role!

+ Use WISELY your Lazarus grenade to quickly revive fallen teammates. Know it's range (same as a grenade) and it's radius (which is roughly 3 or 4 meters (sorry about the metric system :-(). REMEMBER THAT THE LAZARUS IGNORE WALLS so you can revive teammates that are on the next room.

+ COMMUNICATE: medic is a difficult class to master, it really helps if you communicate (for instance: Don't respawn, I'm coming for you! Etc.)

+ When doing the escort objective, if you have an engineer in your team let him escort and follow the soldier(s) you'll be much more useful.

THE ENGINEER:
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Engine10

[Guardian role], support role and objective player.
Engineer is the best defensive class as it provides 2 mines to control chokepoints and entries, and 1 pyro mine to either alert you when placed near entries or better, kill the ennemy when placed in front of static objectives. Also the engineer class has the gatling turret that guards sites. Try to put turrets near the objectives in blindspots and on the higher ground (to make ennemies loose time as they are forced to perform a grenade shot to disable it).
In ATTACK, engineer should buff the soldier and themselves. Once the objective site is secured switch to a defensive stance (so start deploying turrets etc.). If he is objective player, I suggest he only deploys one turret (as deploying mines takes more time and are less rewarding) then starts doing the objective. However if you have two engineers and time then you can deploy more defense as one of your teammate will do the objective.

THE OPERATIVE:
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Operat10

[Objective player] can also play defensive and support role.
ATTACK: The operative is the only class that can complete hacking objectives as you know and it should be taken only for that purpose. There is one exception thought: if you need his EMP grenade to disable mines and turrets when your team really can't penetrate the ennemy defense. Know that you need a very good slayer to do the job after as your team will be gimped if you're Op without a hacking objective to complete.
DEFENSE: The operative class can control one entry with his sticky bomb which works as a mine however it's visible on the floor. He can control an area and slow down the ennemy team with his caltrop grenade. Also he can gain time with his EMP grenade that slow down the the progress of objectives (such as stoping the countdown of the bomb for a short amount of time.)

+ You have to communicate! A well-organized team that communicates can crush your team if you don't communicate.
-Assign codes to locations to quickly locate ennemies for your team, to be organized...
-Say that you need a buff, that you are in difficulty etc.

+ Do not line-up as you'll make easy targets for the ennemy or worse kill your friend by mistake as friendly-fire is always on.

+ WATCH THE KILLFEED (see "glossary" 6-1) to see which player is dead, which threat is out etc. Same things about clothes: learn to quickly recognize players.

+ Every classes suit different roles and should be played accordingly. Also, it takes time to re-adapt to a class. That's why you need to assign people to certain classes and make them stick to them!

+ Remember that there CAN'T be more than 2 engineer per teams.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER As_the10
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

TEAM SETUPS:
For ATTACK, your team setup heavily relies on the objective, on the map and can be arguable, so those are more general advice. Also those suggestions are listed from best to good.

+ For planting-the-bomb objectives:
-4V4: [2 Soldiers/ 1 Medic/ 1 Engineer]
-3V3: [2 Soldiers/ 1 Medic] or [1 Soldier/ 1 Medic/ 1 Engineer]
-2V2: [1 Soldier/ 1 Medic]

+ For hacking objectives:
-4V4: [1 Operative/ 2 Soldiers / 1 Engineer] or (When the spawn is far: [1 Operative/ 1 Soldier / 1 Engineer / 1 Medic]
-3V3: [1 Operative/ 1 Soldier/ 1 Engineer] or (When the spawn is far: [1 Operative/ 1 Soldier / 1 Medic] or [1 Operative/ 2 Soldiers]
-2V2: [1 Operative/ 1 Soldier]

+ For escorting objectives:
-escort the hostage:
-4V4: [2 Soldiers/ 1 Medic/ 1 Engineer]
-3V3: [2 Soldiers/ 1 Medic] or [1 Soldier/ 1 Medic/ 1 Engineer]
-2V2: [1 Soldier/ 1 Medic]

-escort the robot.
-4V4: [2 Soldiers/ 1 Medic/ 1 Engineer]
-3V3: [2 Soldiers/ 1 Engineer]
-2V2: [1 Soldier/ 1 Engineer]

+ For repairing objectives:
-4V4: [2 Soldiers/ 2 Engineers] or (When the spawn is far: [1 Soldier / 2 Engineers / 1 Medic]
-3V3: [2 Soldiers/ 1 Engineer] or [1 Soldiers/ 2 Engineers]
-2V2: [1 Soldier/ 1 Engineer]

ATTACK STRATEGIES AND TIPS

+ Don't lose time at the beginning of the game, switch class before the game is ready and rush the objective site as Engineer won't have all of their defense.

+ Attack as a whole team: try not to be too far from each other. However after respawning you might want to attack alone as they will have time to put defenses and it will become harder to attack. If it's only a suicide mission then it's not worth it.

+ Raid the objective site from different entries as you'll pressure the ennemy who'll need to fight multiple angles at the same time.

+ Know the Rush routes and the seconds it takes to get to the objective, and the time it takes for the ennemy to deploy turrets, mines around it.

+ Once the objective site is secured, let the objective player do his job and switch to a defensive stance.

TEAM SETUPS:
For DEFENSE only I'd say without a doubt that the best config is:

-4V4: [2 Soldiers/ 2 Engineers]
-3V3: [1 Soldier/ 2 Engineers] (and/or [2 Soldier/ 1 Engineers] when the ennemy team escorts)
-2V2: [1 Soldier/ 1 Engineer]

DEFENSIVE STRATEGIES AND TIPS:

+ Soldiers need to quickly block the chokepoints ahead to slow down the ennemy team while the engineers separate to deploy their defensive tools around the objective. So one mine per entries to block and locate the ennemy (remember: 1 mine = non lethal, 2 mines or 1 mine + 1 Snatchel charge = 1 kill). One pyromine SLIGHTLY AHEAD of the objective (if not, the ennemy team's objective player can still plant the bomb/hack/repair by being static.) and your turret controlling an area and placed in blindspots by preference because one grenade can disable it.

+ Kill the medic first as he can raise his teammates. No medic? Then kill the objective player. This one is your biggest threat as he's the only one that grants victory to his team.

+ You can also see the Operative class review if you fancy playing operative in defense and need some tips.

GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER 1v1_ma10
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~[5-4-1]~
There are only two playstyles: aggressive and defensive. Simply when you adopt an aggressive playstyle you go for the kill and chase the ennemy whereas in a defensive playstyle you wait for him to come to you. I'd say that the best defense is the best offense AS LONG AS YOU DON'T GET HIT. Otherwise you need to master both if you want to become a great player. Here is some advice:
+ THINK AS THE ENNEMY AND STOP THINKING AS YOURSELF! If you anticipate what he'll be doing, thinking one step ahead, he has no chance except if he has way better mastery of physical abilities than you or has connection superiority. In a word ADAPT!
+ If you see an ennemy, spot it immediatly to your team
+ Always run along walls from cover to cover, as if needed you can do a walljump to escape.
+ Use your knowledge of technical skills.
+ If you play as a Medic: RUN! And let your teamates do the job.
+ Try to outsmart the ennemy by anticipating his moves and be able to control the engagement. Remember: You don't want a fair fight:
-Aggresive playstyle: Always attack from the flank or from behind. Flanking is difficult in a 1V1 as after your first shot you'll appear on the ennemy radar for roughly 10 seconds making the flanks predictable. So flanking works best when one of your teammate is occupying the ennemy. Flanking should be quick so it's important to know the shortcuts of the map.
-Defensive playstyle: When expecting an encounter, try to be on the higher ground as elevation provides cover and make it easier to chase or escape from the ennemy. It's also easier to perform grenade shooting because of gravity.
+ If your ennemy is 1shot (see "glossary" 6-1) and is retreating:
-Firstly say it to your teammates, they may be close to him and can finish him.
-If you have health and you know he doesn't have his grenades immediatly chase him, you need to finish him ASAP. Beware though as he may be leading you to a trap if for instance:
-One of his teammate is close.
-He plays soldier and had time to regain access to grenade.
-Especially, if he's on the Defensive team, he may want you to walk on a mine.
+ If you're 1shot immediatly retreat, and tell your teammates about it. When retreating try for a wall-up as you'll gain speed and will be able to move backwards thus keeping putting pressure on your ennemy. You have now multiple choices:
-Attempt a flank (difficult to do since after firing your weapon you appear on the ennemy radar for 10 seconds. So a higly-skilled player can predict it.
-Wait for back-up, health regen and/or the grenade cooldown then re-engage.
-If he's also 1shot he will most likely retreat two so it's risky but you can chase him if you're confident enough. Beware though as you'll be very vulnerable once you killed him as you might be 1 shot and out of ammo and he'll quickly be in downed fire so immediatly:
-Best scenario: Switch to your secondary, make a walljump to go behind him if you have space and finish him while strafing.
-Escape and ask a teammate to finish him.
-Worst scenario: Go behind cover, wait for your health regen and finish him.
+ Once you ennemy is killed finish him ASAP as "Downed Fire" is a pain in the *** and is a Major threat (Sir! Yes, Sir!). Also be aware that Ranked-4-Medics can raise themselves. Once they have used it, they can't use it for roughly 1-2 minutes.
+ Try not to rage and keep your blood cold as raging makes you play aggressivly often resulting in your death. You need to stay cool and focused so you can plan ahead and make the best decision, also it annoys your teammates and prevent them from communicating.
+ Don't forget that you're a Red Dot on the ennemy's radar. If you're spotted or shoot an unsilenced weapon, or don't have "silent running" and run within a certain radius of the opponent. You're a red dot for roughly 10 seconds. Because the radar doesn't take elevation into account you can confuse your ennemy by entering a place with multiple floors
+ Always vary your routes and your behavior during fights. Every players have habits and you should be able to recognize those of the ennemy and his mental skill level to outsmart him. By breaking your habits, you'll become unpredictable thus confusing the ennemy. That's why you need to learn from your mistakes, analyse the ennemy behavior and adapt. The only reason you should not do so is if the ennemy really can't do anything against you.
-As an example: You're attacking and always take the same route at the beginning. Your opponent knows you well and knows your habit. That's why you should assume that he'll be waiting for you at that place and you should play differently. If you're on the defensive side, firstly evaluate the mental skill level of your opponent. If he's an average player he'll most likely take the same route over and over again, If you see that he's an expert player he'll most likely try to change his style. Try to anticipate that and prepare for a counter. That's where it gets tricky and where it's the funniest because two skilled player can do the counter to counter the counter of the counter etc. because they always think ahead thus making in fact their fight a sheer matter of luck. But if you play like this, you'll pawn beginners, average players and will compete with expert players.
+Walljump:
"The basic premise of a wall jump is that the player jumps into a wall or another vertical barrier of some kind and pushes off its surface in order to start another jump. The player is sometimes able to change directions after a wall jump, meaning the player character can direct him or herself into the wall again in order to repeatedly wall jump and ascend structures."
(source: wikipedia)
+Pips:
Small energy segments that you use for abilities. For example, tossing a grenade costs 1 pip.
+Cooldown
"Cooldown is, in numerous video games, the minimum length of time that the player needs to wait after using an ability before they can use it again."
(source wikipedia)
+Tea bag
"To place testicles in someone's mouth and procede in a up and down motion."
(source: Urban dictionnary)
+Spawn
"In multiplayer games, the place where a dead person or a person that has just joined is born or created."
(source: Urban dictionnary)
+Spawn kill
"In a multiplayer combat game (particularly a First Person Shooter) to kill another player as they spawn." (source: Urban dictionnary)
+Spawn trap
"The act in a first person shooter were the enemy team camps at your team's spawn point" (source: Urban dictionnary), in Brink it's possible to spawn trap if you go past the turrets that guards the ennemy base.
+Killfeed
The kills that comes up at the bottom right of your screen when you or anyone kill someone.
+1shot (pronounced "oneshot")
Term used to qualify a player who will die if he takes 1 more shot. So you can also say 2shots etc.. in brink after 2shot it becomes rather pointless to even notice it ("Dude, that guy's 3shots finish him!" *facepalm...*).
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER About_11
So this is the part where I talk about myself...
My name is Christophe alias The Mind, I'm 21 years old and I'm currently studying Cinema and Theatre at Paris. I'm also working at McDonald to pay my bills (yeah baby!).
I'm very curious and I'm fond of music (of any kind mostly), movies and TV shows, video-games and Mangas/French comic-strips mostly but also Comics. About mangas I'm especially following the progress of Naruto and One Piece by reading scans. About video games, I play since Master system thanks to my brothers, and my favorite games are RPG firstly and FPS, also since 5-6 month I play Versus-fighting games mostly SSFIV AE as you can see "Claw" or Vega my main in my profile.
My initiation in Brink and in the FPS world in general was hard. I used to really suck at my first online multiplayer FPS: COD. But with the help of two youtube channels: "Search and destroy for dummies" and "Gravity81688" I'm now an expert player. But when I met Ematic on Brink, I was crushed...My goal was to defeat him. He became my Jedi master...and I showed him who's the boss on the Winter Cup tournament. The training was a success and as of now I rape him on a daily basis.
I'm also second lieutenant in the team: S*ck My 'Nades and co-author of this forum. My goal now is to be a main part of the remaining Brink community as this is the community that I like and that I want to play with.
He's a very good player, the respectful leader of our team: "S*ck My 'Nades" but also a good friend. He also gave me advice when I was writing the guide especially about the Op's efficiency in defense and the Attack team setup part.
-Mattgreen who helped me throughout the guide to correct langage mistakes and who gave me a pertinent opinion to enahnce it. I'd also like to thank him for being very active and helpful though he's a newcomer. Also if you read this Matt, sorry for saying that you were a noob the first time we met...:-D
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Empty Re: GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER
Post  Oz70NYC Tue 1 May - 18:58
I had to join, because I had to post...because I have to speak on how convoluted, misinformed and basically WRONG your "guide" is. 1st off, I'm NOT an "Average" Brink player. On the PS3 side I'm one of the top 10, and definitely one of the top 5 Operatives in Brink on ANY platform. (My stats tell no lies. Oz70NYC...go check them out). Your guide in a nutshell is telling new jacks to play one way. That in and of itself is doing more harm then good. And your bit about playing Light only and about Operatives sucking? My friend, I could run Heavy Operative and make you and anyone you play with look like god damn fools. To put it bluntly...your guide is shit. I don't know what game it's for, but it sure as hell isn't for Brink. Now feel free to delete this post and ban this account, because this forum looks like a waste of banwidth to begin with. I just wanted to come here, punch you in the mouth for posting complete and utter garbage in the form of being an actual guide to make people "better", and piss you off.
Objective completed.
Post  MattSeven Wed 2 May - 2:26
Hello dear Oz70NYC,
I think that what you are saying about the guide is wrong. The players who made it are quite good players and it has been made to help other players and nothing else. It is not a Brink Bible it is just some tips to improve other players skills. So if you do not agree with those examples, please posts your ideas and how you could improve this Guide. If you are a good a player it will be easy for you to demonstrate how useless this guide is or you can also improve it by giving us some tips. If you are really interested about the game Brink please post as much as you like.
You also wrote "I just wanted to come here, punch you in the mouth", well you did not punch anyone nor anything except maybe your keyboard and sorry to say but you also did not pissed off anyone here simply because we are not searching to create battle between the members but just to create interesting ideas about Brink.
You are now free to insult us as much as you like and you are now also free to share with us new ideas or new insights that we could of miss.
Objective in progress.
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Empty Re: GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER
Post  Oz70NYC Wed 2 May - 6:11
Where is the guide wrong? PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT!!! Where do I start? Oh wait...from the top. You might wanna get a soda and some munchies, this is gonna take a while.
Weightclass
While the general consensus is competitively Lights are the best weight to play as, this consensus obviously aren't very good at Brink. The truth of the matter is a team that has balance in all weights are the team that will win. Competitively the max number of players is 5v5. Say you have a team of 5 lights against a team of 2 heavies, 2 mediums and 1 light. In my experience (Seeing as I'm an officer of nWo, the best PS3 Brink clan AND winners of the Holiday Brink tournament on our console), team two not only wins, they dominate. Yes, as a light you have maximum mobility. But you also have access to weapons which as ANY Brink vet knows, after the last patch have become completely unreliable. Yes, you can still drop people with SMGs. But you need to be in CQ to be effective with all of them, even the Balpdaum, the most stable of all SMGs. So lets see, you need to be in close to do any real damage with an SMG, but as a light...you're pretty much doomed to be dropped in close range against a bigger gun...no matter HOW fast you are. Kinda nulls that whole argument now, doesn't it? Unless you're running a light Soldier or Engineer...and even then you're still destined to be demolished. Here's an example, and I'm going to use actual, factual numbers to describe it for you.
The Light body type has 120 health default. Up to five extra health pips can be earned. 1 from the Battle Hardened skill, 2 from a captured health command post, and 2 from a medic with the Improved Health ability. Battle Hardened adds 30 HP, bringing their health up to 150. The remaining 5 pips a light will gain in battle add 25, 20, 15 & 10 HP, bringing the grand total HP a light can have in battle to 220 HP. Seems like a lot right? WRONG. Because there are factors that come into play as a light that The_Mind didn't think to bring into consideration...because he obviously didn't know of them. (Hard to make an accurate guide when you don't have all your facts.) Lights absorb damage at a higher rate then the other body types. 1% more in fact. And there there's also the hit marker multipliers. 1.5% for headshots, 1.0% for torso and .75% for limb shots. So whereas a Heavy taking a headshot from say...The Barnett, (Which does 187 HP of damage with a headshot), they're still going to be standing if hit and be able to fight. A light at max health only has 220 HP, minus the 2% body type damage penalty AND the multiplier. Because I'm all about giving CORRECT information, I'll even do the math for you...
Light = 220 MAX HP (With command post & medic improved buffs)
187 Headshot Damage...adding the 1% Body Type penalty that makes it 188.87 damage. THEN we had the headshot multiplier, which is 1.5%, bringing the total damage a light will take from a Barnett headshot to...190 HP. Out of 220. That's a total difference of 30 HP.
Not much health left after eating that shot, eh? OH WAIT...THERE'S MORE!!! Engineer double damage buffs. Those things add a 15% increase to the max damage of a weapon. The max damage of the Barnett is 187. 15% of 187 is 28.05. 187 plus 28.05 = 215. 05. Translation? If you've already taken shots from someone else, and you're hit in the head with a double buffed Barnett...hope there's a medic near by...cuz you're done. Another example? The Hammerdiem. My Heavy weapon of choice, and damage per shot the strongest gun on the game. Post patch, this beast does a monstrous 195 HP of damage inside of it's optimal attack range (15 meters)...UNBUFFED. Double damage buffed you add 15%, which is 29.25 HP. 195 + 29.25 = 224.25 DAMAGE. It also means if you're a double health and command post buffed light against a double damage buffed heavy running a Hammer, you're DEAD no matter how you slice it. All he needs is to get ONE shot on target to your head or torso, and you're finished. End of story. Wait for a revive syringe or go back to spawn and think about how dumb a move like challenging a big guy with the biggest gun on the Ark with your little Bee-Bee gun was. I could boil down more numbers from other weapons for you all, but who likes numbers? I just needed to disprove the complete bullshit The_Mind wrote about lights being the optimal competitive body type. They're not. They're so far from it it's not even funny.
Then there's the statement of movement. Yes, the 1st rule of Brink is "Move more then you shoot". The only advantage a light has over the other types is movement, and that's marginal at best. In the hands of an experienced light, being able to traverse the terrain and use it offensively is vital. But your "guide" isn't for experienced guys. It's for new players. So for you to say go light and nothing else is pigeon-holing them into one play style. And some people might not like that play style. My primary character is a light Operative/Soldier. I won't pat my own back, but I'm pretty damn good with that character, because I utilize the light's strengths while minimizing it's weaknesses. That ON TOP of my knowledge of the Op class (which I'll bash you on later) makes me pretty much the most dangerous player on a map. A fact that competitively against friends, fellow clan mates AND opponents they take into full consideration. I don't have nearly the firepower as others, yet I've got whole teams trying to gun me down more then OBJECTIVE class players. That's being good at what you do. But that didn't come from luck. It came from knowing how to fight the other classes, and body types, as well as knowing what weapons do what. That only happens from one thing...PLAYING OTHER BODY TYPES. The ONLY way you're going to learn how to use the light body effectively is by playing as the other two. Learning their weaknesses, the way their weapons work, the frames of their movement, and so on. Telling rookies "Quit playing medium and play light" is doing them a disservice. Walljumping isn't a vital part of being a high level player...knowing how to do damage while minimizing your own is.
Classes, skills and tactics
Oooooooooooooooooh how positively WRONG you were on this one, fella. 1st off...let's get the obvious out of the way. Your statement on the Operative class:
OPERATIVE ABILITIES *cough..sucks..cough..cough...*
Is without a doubt the most convoluted, trolling, misinformed piece of utter garbage I've ever read. The fact of the matter is in the hands of someone skilled with the class and ALL of it's abilities, an Op can be the most dangerous class in a match, ESPECIALLY if it's a map that there is no hacking objectives. How's that you wonder? Simple. You're primary job as an Op in Brink isn't to kill, it's to disrupt. To throw a wrench into whatever plan, offensive or defensive, the other team is running. Using only the Comms Hack and Disguise abilities, a skilled Op can break enemy lines, give away locations of enemy defenses (Turrets, Mines, Satchels, Etc) and even take down enemies unsuspectingly as well. An example I'll use is something I myself did in a competitive clan match.
On Refuel playing as Resistance we'd reached that Hacking objective. The problem we faced was that the opposing team...made up of 3 heavies, a medium and a light, were dug in. Three of them were Engineers, and set up a literal minefield around the objective, as well as Gatling Turrets as they were Rank 5. The direct approach wasn't working...at all. So I devise a plan as my light Op character. I follow a teammate who tracked down the opposing medium character and took him out by the 1st command post. I hit the Operative Combo on him (Comms Hack & Disguise) and move to the objective. As an Op in disguise, the only person who can see through it is the person you're disguised as or another Op. Needless to say, the 2 heavies camping the objective weren't ops. I managed to literally walk right pass all 3 of them, situate myself behind them, and uncork my whole drum magazine into them. 3 heavies...down. Rather then finish them all off, I leave them laying there, as the longer they wait for their medic buddy, the longer they're not in the fight. I hack all 3 turrets and EMP the mines so that the other Op on my team could come up and help me hack the objective. By the time anyone showed back up to oppose us, the objective was 45% hacked and my team set up counter defenses. Needless to say we won the match in the end. And a big part of is was my play as Op, and knowing the tendencies of other players.
There's even more to the Op class then that. Yes, Ops have no "Buff" abilities. They can't make themselves stronger, or faster, or revive themselves. But they can provide intel. They can take other human players off their game. Frustrate and confuse. Play mind games. (As I always do.) If I disguise as someone, Bot or Human, and trick you so blindly into thinking I'm that team mate, then blow your brains out, what's your natural instinct going to be? You want payback. So what does the average person do? They hunt me...the Op, down. Then when I do it again, it makes them even more angry. After the 3rd or 4th time, I've effectively taken said guy out of the match, because he's more concerned with finding and killing me then he is my team mate who just shot him in the face. Furthermore, as an Op...you can RAKE IN XP. More XP then any other class in fact. For Soldiers, the amount you get for ammo sharing depends on how low a team mate's ammo is, and scavenging nets 50XP a pop. For an Engi, you get 75XP for damage buffing and giving Kevlar. Medics get 100XP for reviving, and 50-75 for health, speed or adrenaline buffing. Ops get 50 for homing beacon spots, 150 for comms hacks and 100 for disguising. What's more? And Op can do their "abilities" rapidly. There's a 15 second count down between comms hacks, but homing beacon and disguising can be done at will. All you need to do is ADS enemies to spot them, or go up to a dead enemy and steal his identity. Simple hit fire to break the disguise, and go do it again.
As I said earlier, in the hands of a pro...and Op can be the single greatest terror in a game, and not have to do anything in the vein of combat. There have been competitive clan matches I've been in where I rake in 10K plus XP with only 15 kills the whole match. Why? Because I play as an Op the way it's meant to be played. Not aggressively. Not to rack up kills. But to disrupt the enemy. Then there are matches where I get best overall, best Op and most kills because the same reason. Because I utilize the abilities of the class to the letter they're meant to be used so well, that no one on the opposing side know what my character actually even looks like, because I fool them in disguise so fluidly it's IMPOSSIBLE not to kill them. In a nutshell, The_Mind...it's not a matter of the Operative class sucking, it's a matter of YOUR sucking at the Operative class. Ya' might wanna amend that part in the guide, buddy.
Ok, enough of the Op stuff...time for the other classes. Here are the proven best, most useful abilities to bring to The Ark: (Based on having an Level 24 character AND the Agents Of Change DLC)
Universal
Battle Hardened - More health is always nice.
Supply Max Increase - Same is more supplies.
Combat Intuition - Knowing where you're being targeted from works good for you AND your team.
Sprinting Grenade - Move more then you shoot, but if you can toss a grenade while moving, that's good too.
Sprinting Reload - In a game where moving is paramount, this one is a no brainer.
Sense Of Perspective - When taking command posts or objectives, this is vital to defending yourself.
Downed Fire - Just because you're down, doesn't mean you're out of the fight. Especially effective near objectives where people aren't paying attention.
Soldier
Armor Piercing Rounds - Gives your bullets a little more bang for the buck.
Flashbang - Perfect for moments where you're overrun, or need to break enemy lines. Just don't blind yourself.
Grenade Mastery - Grenades are a soldier's best friend. This lets you throw them more often.
Scavenge - Probably the most important Soldier skill. With this you can maintain a virtually endless stream of supply pips, which means a virtually endless supply of bullets. And who doesn't like having more bullets then the next guy?
Extra Kevlar - Gives you a defensive edge against other classes, but not against Soldiers with APR.
Extra Magazine - Again, more bullets...more fun.
Frag Blast
Grenade Damage - The combination of this and Frag Blast turns your grenades into heavy grenades, capable of doing sick amounts of damage, and dropping more enemies in the blast radius.
Napalm Grenade - Best used in one of the many choke points on in close proximity to the objective.
Medic
Adrenaline Boost - Best used near an objective on an objective class player so that they can complete it without being downed by enemies.
Increased Supplies - You're going to burn through a LOT of pips as a medic, so having more is useful.
Metabolism - Helps team mates regen health faster, thus keeping them standing and in the fight longer.
Improved Increased Supplies - Even more supply pips, which means even more supplies to heal and support your team.
Improved Life Buff - Gives your team and yourself 2 bonus life pips.
Self Resurrection - Nothing need be said.
Lazurus Grenade - Need to revive a group of team mates in a hurry? This is how you do it. Just remember that team mates revived with one only have 10% health, so be ready to cover and support them when they get up.
Field Regen Unit - When defending an objective, or a path to an objective, this is pivotal to holding the line.
Engineer
Gear Head - Makes you build and deploy stuff faster. Fast is good.
Light Turret - One of the most essential tools of the class. No brainer here.
Command Post Upgrade - Doubles the buff for command posts, so they give two extra pips instead of one.
Medium Turret - When this becomes available to you, GET IT. It's much more effective then the light version.
Improved Weapon Buff - Increases weapon damage by 15%. More damage = more dead enemies.
Extra Landmine - More mines, more defensive options.
Pyro Mine - Combied with Extra Landmine, this gives you THREE mines plus a turret. More then enough to hold a defensive position if used right.
Gattling Turret - Tracks faster, hits harder, has a hire RoF of the other turrets and a farther range. Nuff said.
Operative
Firewall Command Post - Makes it take longer for enemies to capture posts, taking them away from the objective and giving YOU the chance to sneak up on them and take them out.
Homing Beacon - Let's you spot mines, enemies AND see through other Op's disguises. One of your most effective tools.
Comms Hack - Combined with Disguising, this is the ability you'll use the most. The "Operative Combo" as I call it. It gives away enemy positions on the map, which is helpful anyway you slice it.
Caltrop Grenades - Can be used passively to determine what direction enemies are coming from, obstruct passage ways AND do damage to heavily damaged enemies trying to retreat.
Hack Turret - What better way to counter an enemy's defenses then to turn them against them?
Cortex Bomb - Used correctly, it can severely damage or kill depending on how damaged near by enemies are. The range isn't far, so it's best used when you're pretty much right near an enemy.
EMP Grenade - Slows down Soldier HE charges and Operative hack boxes, as well as disables Engineer mines and turrets. Also slows down maintenance bots and disables the map of anyone caught in the blast radius.
UAV - Used properly, it can help you quick acquire intel on enemy positions and defenses. Can also be detonated remotely. Doesn't take much to destroy it though, so use it wisely.
One thing The_Mind did get right is the idea of doing what we call "Dual-Spec'ing" your character. That being creating an ability build between two classes. You can mix and match classes of course, but above are the proven best, most effective abilities for competitive play. It's possible to create what the Brink veterans call a "Jack Of All Trades" or "Jack" build, but that's reserved for players who know the ins and outs of all classes and abilities. Naturally a Jack isn't going to be great at one class, but will be good (or capable) in all of them.
Physical & Technical Skills
About competitive gaming we can say that the game can be broken down into two categories: physical skills and mental skills. Physical skills is simply your reaction time, speed of movement, accuracy, mastery of controls etc. Without being Einstein I know basically that information collected by your senses are send to your brain, translated, and that your brain send orders back to your body. The time it takes for information to travel can be significantly decreased through experience and muscle memory. It's a matter of micro seconds but it's really important as the game is fast-paced. It's comparable to a musician who play the same piece until it becomes flawless and more importantly INSTINCTIVE. What I'm saying is that there is no secret here to get better in FPS from a physical point of view: it comes with practise (Think you meant PRACTICE there, may wanna fix that). On the other hand Mental skills are more difficult to learn and more rewarding.
Take all of that and throw it out of the window. Instinct is only 25% of what's needed to be good in Brink. The way the game is broken down is pretty much completely mechanical. Everything, health, weapon damage, even movement...it's all mathematical. Learning the math and how to optimize your effectiveness while minimizing your ineffectiveness is how you survive on The Ark. Knowing the effective range and damage output of your weapon, how much distance your slide covers between body types, even the number of seconds it takes to reload or switch a weapon...that's what makes you better. Anything that enables you the "1st shot". Because in Brink, if you get the 1st shot in, you usually win the engagement. Get ready...here comes more math for ya'.
EVERY weapon has a statistical output that measures and determines it's RoF (Rate Of Fire), Damage output and effective range. The effective range is how close you need to be for the gun to deal it's max damage output. The further out you fire, the less the accuracy and damage the weapon does. Another variable in the gunplay is ADS (Aim Down Sight). There is a bonus in accuracy for all weapons when you ADS. Higher in fact the for what poster you're in. Doesn't matter if you're standing, crouching, sliding or whatever. Your accuracy bullet for bullet best when you ADS. Sustained fire with automatic weapons decreases accuracy tremendously after 7-8 shots, even when ADS is used. (Basically, burst fire is the most effective type of fire you can use.) As far as effective range, LMGs SMGs, Shotguns begin to lose their range at a closer distance then ARs do. On the other hand, LMGs and SMGs don't lose accuracy in full auto fire as fast as ARs do. Knowing these strengths and weakness are vital to knowing how to use your gun of choice effectively. Also taking into account the variables of damage and health buffs. It's chess, not checkers. Because if I know that the effective range of the Sea Eagle is anything inside 20 meters whereas you're trying to hit me with a Kross from outside of 15, I'm gonna kill you before you even drop my health to half.
I will give you credit for your combat tips as far as Knockdowns and "The Holy Trinity" as you called it. But the buttlove you give wall jumping? Quick way to get some poor new jack killed against a seasoned veteran...or anyone with an Underslung 'nade launcher. I've stopped more wall hopping lil' guys dead in their tracks with a heavy grenade to the face then I care to count. All one needs to do is aim at the WALL and not you, and you're going down. Another thing to take into consideration, the individual's reaction time. (The 25% instinct mentioned above.) Not once in the damn near 300 hours I put into Brink have I ever seen ANYONE use a Wall jump as an effective offensive tool. They get shot out of the air faster then they can breath. Hell, I only pulled off an over the head wall jump kill on someone ONCE...the week the game came out when everyone were still n00bs. Mentioning that as an effective tactic is a waste of text...cuz it's not.
The rest of the guide I'm not even gonna get into now...I've been sitting in front of this monitor for over an hour typing this shat. Maybe another post...if even that. Bottom line...before you go and make a "guide", know what the hell you're talking about. Get the numbers, do the math, put in the research, and KNOW THE WHOLE GAME...not just the parts you gravitate to.
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Empty Re: GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER
Post  TeslaDeCastaka Wed 2 May - 16:04
Hello Oz70NYC why all this "rage"? i have read all your mini-guide(thanks for the info cheers ) and i do not see that of your point of wiew is so opposite to: "The_Mind guide for the Average Brink player" not rookies as you written!(first of your points of criticism), you did well to write the "near 300hours" and "one of the best PS3 player", because im about 150h(only 2 intensive months) so im Average, you are Expert and the people that make this guide are Veterans, i think they are over 3000h(very common time after 1 years from the exit of game for online multiplayer maniacs) and i faced almost other ten of them on xbox online that easy play with that exact skill level the guide speak of (and that other online game not even allow to reach), if you have played so little and not met none of great experience than yours is possible you can not imagine all this need of knowing the fast way to play at the most high level, the guide is not definitive or complete or the only way to play, as is written is designed to quickly educate at the more "easy" way to play skirmish (4vs4 or similar, with no command post, with friendly fire, etc..) so your contribution enriches it with the focus on operative, that The_Mind classified as "poor" only for the skirmish is guide speak.
..if only you had expressed in a more polite and mature way Neutral ...
Oz70NYC wrote:I had to join, because I had to post...because I have to speak on how convoluted, misinformed and basically WRONG your "guide" is. 1st off, I'm NOT an "Average" Brink player. On the PS3 side I'm one of the top 10, and definitely one of the top 5 Operatives in Brink on ANY platform. (My stats tell no lies. Oz70NYC...go check them out). Your guide in a nutshell is telling new jacks to play one way. That in and of itself is doing more harm then good. And your bit about playing Light only and about Operatives sucking? My friend, I could run Heavy Operative and make you and anyone you play with look like god damn fools. To put it bluntly...your guide is shit. I don't know what game it's for, but it sure as hell isn't for Brink. Now feel free to delete this post and ban this account, because this forum looks like a waste of banwidth to begin with. I just wanted to come here, punch you in the mouth for posting complete and utter garbage in the form of being an actual guide to make people "better", and piss you off.
Objective completed.
First of all no need to be rude.
you obviously disagree with this Brink-guide, which me and a lot of other Brink-players find helpful, but i think you could have said it in a nicer way. instead of being taken serious you come of as cocky and rude.
btw. I don't wanna get in any discussion - L I love you VE, peace and rock'n'roll <3
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Empty Re: GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER
Post  Oz70NYC Wed 2 May - 17:11
If you think my comments or the way I project myself is snarky or rude, it's because that's how I react when I see bullshit. And a lot of what I saw in that guide is bullshit. Same as the way Ematic blows the information off because I don't consider is precious wall jump a viable offensive tool. Can it be used to get the upper hand? Sure. But to think it serves any tactical use outside of reaching terrain that the other two body types can't is in a word...ignorant. Which from his posts here and on the Bethesda forums...he is. I'm not even entertaining his feedback as competent, because he's not. He's a butthurt ESL fanboy who thinks his one sided, linear way of playing is the best. Brink on Consoles costs $10 these days. Pick up a copy, level your character up to 24, and come meet one in a 1 on 1 match so I can show you how inadequate your precious light is against my medium. 'Til then, and I say this as forthright as possible, kill yourself.
The personal points I used in my retort were meant to be a barometer being a competent player, understanding all entry level and advanced tactics in Brink. Skill and success in Brink is mathematic. If you know the numbers, you dominate...because you don't waste time guessing in battle. You know what your gun can and can't do. You know your ranges. You know the human element of facing other players. You gauge whether or not it's smart to fight or retreat rather then stand and trade shots against a player in a better effective range then you. THESE are things I take into account when I play Brink. I've been on The Ark since week one, day one, and I can literally say that I and my clan mate Lightning_V wrote the book on the Operative clan. And we have both wrote EXTENSIVE guides on how to play the class efficiently and effectively on the Bethesda forums. All one needs to do is search for them, because naturally they're buried pages back. Bottom line, if I came off harsh or brash, it's cuz I am. I don't sugar coat what I have to say nor how I say it. If it offends you, my apologies. That's never the intent unless that's EXACTLY what the intent is. My 1st post? Completely meant to offend. (Job well done) My counter "guide"? Meant to mildly offend, but be brutally honest and informative. (Job well done again). This post? Not meant to offend anyone aside from ESLFanboyMatic, cuz ignorance must be bliss. That's all I got for now, but I'm sure someone else will come up with something "interesting" to say that prompt another snake strike from me.
I probably started playing Brink on 360 online in January, and so far he is the best player i have seen play.
and I'd love to see you play, you seem so cocky i would probably laugh my ass off i u weren't that good. hahaha:)
and no, I haven't read the hole discussion, I don't really see how this tuned out to be a big discussion in the first place. Agree to disagree is one of my favorite things. It's a good thing that not all people are alike:)
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Empty Re: GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER
Post  The_Mind Mon 7 May - 15:55
It all started here: http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1369701-aa-brink-guide/ ... today the calm is back again thanks to our voluntary silent as evil can't be fought without bringing more evil.
I think that you are what you do. I add that what you do under an alias or an avatar as you would in let's say... a forum or a video-game also shows what you really are. Why? Because an alias or an avatar is only an extension of yourself so what you do when you hide behind those disguises never stop to be an expression of yourself. The only difference is that you enjoy from the anonymity of your disguise and can lower your social mask. That's why I want to draw a parallel between how one of the best PS3 Brink player acts on a forum and how you should not follow this behavior if you want to win in a game. Needless to say how much I doubt the skill level of a gamer when he acts in such childish and impulsive way in an argument. I allow myself to make such a comparison not only because of what I wrote earlier but also because an argument is like a small war. It's a battle where you have words as weapons.
So I say let this argument be a lesson to all of us on how we should play this game. Big thanks to Oz70NYC and LightningV who have been very comprehensive and let me wrote this:
This is not exhaustive but if you want to win a battle whether it's an argument, a chess game, a sword fight or a FPS etc pay attention to this:
+Always keep your head cold. Think before you move. Don't be impulsive otherwise you won't think clearly and will most likely make bad decision, such as contest something and later see that it wasn't false/contradictory. Hence discrediting everything that you'll further say.
+Know your ennemy: know what kind of person/player he is so you can predict his next move, know his habits, what he did to avoid bad surprises. Such as again contest something and later see that it wasn't false/contradictory if only you would have read the whole guide mehehe..
+Play defensive/aggressive when needed. Don't be too predictable. And secure yourself as much as you can. Meaning watch your 6 from time to time, expect confrontation after a corner.. read carefully what you said before posting again as you may contradict yourself or give ammo to the ennemy, if you use numbers to justify something don't forget to indicate your source otherwise they have no value.
+Never give up, but don't confuse stubbornness with determination.
+Learn from your mistakes. Don't make the same mistakes again and again such as I don't know.. contest something and later see that it wasn't false/contradictory.
And that's all for now... I want to add that I made some changes and addition in the guide so I don't hurt more people. Those changes take place in:
+The "introduction"
+The "weaponry" section
+The "game mechanics" section with new info not present in the brink wiki.
Don't forget to use the table of content if you're lost.
Sorry for the long post. Thanx for reading me and have a nice day (or night.. I don't care it's the internet Very Happy )
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Empty Re: GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER
Post  TeslaDeCastaka Tue 8 May - 16:40
Approve and subscribe..very good Mind! this is Strategy! you study philosophy? or is only Art of War? ..seems impossible to argue in mature and costructive way with such obvious bad faith="state of mind of those who consciously deceives" (the dictionary say this to define who has misread or speak out of turn)..; is like trying to injury a creature with the power of regeneration, a TROLL for example, the only way is to burn or even better sewer the head...and yes the more wise way is change the guide like you say.
..if i can help i think that ,over the fact it need to be more clear in the title and introduction for who and what is designed, in fool-proof mode or in a language that all Goblinoids(race of Troll) can understand, and also like: for "who as completed the campaign a couple of time at almost normal and/or hard AND have played almost 100h in public with a little of coop AND make some little tournament with some veterans of more than 1000h", because that is my Brink curriculum and even if i imagine the "justness" of the guide before than that only now i have the phisycal/mental skill and the imagination/experience of that a wall-jump and the game-objectives can do and i want.
..in addition to that i said, i believe that someone go frenzy against your guide because it speak of one-only-way to play and heard mentioned this can make the impression the game has glicht of unbalance and that would be sad and serious problem, i have a lot of this concern then i read it. For now, i know that despite the greater depth and complexity of ever the game is NO unbalance(incredible quality!) but the giant-green-humanoid expressing themselves in shouts and grunts(..not talking of Hulk) may have a concern.
GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER Empty Re: GUIDE FOR THE AVERAGE BRINK PLAYER
Post  The_Mind Tue 8 May - 23:09
Thx man! I really appreciate the support as it's not easy to fight against ghouls n goblins Laughing. I know it's a bit cowardly to make fun of someone behind his back. But as I said I stayed silent on purpose as it's a real waste of time to answer in an endless argument and because some members had already answered the guy. Also when I wanted to announce the changes in my guide, I couldn't help throwing a small booger to those guys...I guess that this is the Olympic spirit Laughing .
About my curriculum I can only say that I have two older brothers (5 and 6 years older) with whom I'm used to arguing for small matter. So I have a lot of experience I can say Very Happy . Also yes I have some knowledge in philosophy or psychology because I'm very curious but I'm no expert. I only know enough to have been influenced in my way of thinking but not to talk about it.
I don't want to be rude or be a bastard after the support you gave me but I disagree with what you said after.
..if i can help i think that ,over the fact it need to be more clear in the title and introduction for who and what is designed, in fool-proof mode or in a language that all Goblinoids(race of Troll) can understand
You're exactly right this is a big mistake that I made I hope I have corrected it.
, and also like: for "who as completed the campaign a couple of time at almost normal and/or hard AND have played almost 100h in public with a little of coop AND make some little tournament with some veterans of more than 1000h"
I can't say that because I don't believe that those things are necessary to read the guide, also it really depends on the person. Though I would secure myself against further argument it would be dishonest of me.
i believe that someone go frenzy against your guide because it speak of one-only-way to play and heard mentioned this can make the impression the game has glicht of unbalance and that would be sad and serious problem, i have a lot of this concern then i read it. For now, i know that despite the greater depth and complexity of ever the game is NO unbalance(incredible quality!)
I believe that people went frenzy for several reasons.
+Firstly it may have something to do with jalousy but I'm not sure.
+Secondly, ignorance/impulsivness as the trolls went mad on things without checking the ambit of the guide. +Lastly, it is in direct connection with the balance of the game. I think that the game is not balanced and I say that I don't know a game 100% balanced. I don't know any racing game that don't have a best car and a worst car, nor in RPG with classes/ perks, Fighting game with characters or FPS with guns.
Brink is not balanced in my opinion as I think that the lightweight is in practise better than the other bodytypes, some abilities are useless, some are mandatory, some guns suck some are the best in their categories etc. That's why I allowed myself in the guide to say "use this, don't use that etc.." as the guide is made for winning in competition. And I believe the trolls saw in my guide some form of "nazism" or "totalitarianism" as I don't let room for the reader's opinion in some parts of the guide. And we all hate totalitarianism so everytime we see it we struggle against it. But this is a game and some things are statistically or technically better than others (in competiton of course) such as light vs heavy, carb9, soldier vs operative etc.. almost like 90% of the time.
